On October 17, 2019, at 1048 hours, Anaheim PD officers were dispatched to assist California Highway Patrol officers with a suspicious gray Lexus with expired registration that appeared to have been abandoned on Santa Ana Canyon Road west of Gypsum Canyon Road. While preparing to tow the Lexus, CHP officers conducted an inventory search of the Lexus and discovered a blue tarp in the trunk that was wrapped tightly around a large object that was the size and shape of a human. CHP officers also noted the smell of a decomposing body and powdered laundry detergent spread throughout the inside of the vehicle. At that point, CHP officers contacted Anaheim PD. Anaheim Homicide detectives responded to the scene and agreed that the item in the trunk was likely a dead body. The presumed body was removed from the trunk and an X-ray confirmed it was a male adult. He was later identified as Adrian Bonar, a military veteran who lived in Escondido (San Diego County). An autopsy revealed that Adrian died of a gunshot wound to his chest. This initiated a five-month investigation that has netted several suspects. As of August 2021, the defendants are awaiting trial.
